    Metadata is information about data.

    The <meta> tag provides metadata about the HTML document. Metadata will not be displayed on the page, but will be machine parsable.

    Meta elements are typically used to specify page description, keywords, author of the document, last modified, and other metadata.

    The <meta> tag always goes inside the head element.

    The metadata can be used by browsers (how to display content or reload page), search engines (keywords), or other web services.

    (Meta Tag) This is the technical term which placed and can be seen in codes of any web page. This is placed basically for robots to crawl/index the web page and make it visible in search engine results through targeted keyword.

    I'll summarize the importance of Meta Tag-

    Meta tag is the text paragraph you see under any search result when you search in search engine.
    How do you choose to click open a site from search result?- 1. Blindly from 1st few results.
    2. Reading Meta text. ( The text inside your <meta>...</meta> tag.)

    So, you must understand now that a major portion of your traffic is coming from your "MAGNETIC" meta text...:)

    The meta tag is you firs contact with your visitors and also search engine.

    I see in a older post that you ask is meta tag is the same with sitemap.

    The answer si no... the sitemap, is and xml file with all your pages of your website.

    Both are very important for the SERP's result
