what is the meaning of tag rel="external" ?

    Never heard of that. but that would be an attribute not a tag, since you cant do <rel="external"> To start anything. Looks like it would be for a source of some kind, I don't know. I have never seen that.

    Links that have the attribute rel="nofollow" will not pass PageRank. The attribute rel="external" has no effect on PageRank, and so will pass it.

    You use that to apply CSS or JS to a link, it doesn't have any special meaning.

    It means the link is an external link to some other website. Apart from that it does nothing.
