imho a real article eg one not written for seo purposes would often have a far higher keyword density than the ones G claims to like.

Anything between 4-7% is considered optimum

Yah maintain keywords density below 5%. This is safe side indeed. And we dont need to have headache. Download firefox extension called seoquake and it will displays the keywords density of ur targeted keyword. For my site i have usually 3-4%.
My query-- For a particular one word keyword, density is higher than 15%, but for my long tailed targeted keyword (main keyword included), its 3%. Now, how will google take this? If they ban a site regarding keyword stuffing issue, am i suppose to understand that, they will kick out of index for that particular keyphrase or what?
    For instance.
My targeted keyword is "personality development". Keywords density for term "personality" is>10% so as development.
But for term "personality development" its under 4%, now how does google take this? If they ban a site for personality and development terms separately , will that site be indexed for "personality development" as a single keyword term?

Yep keyword densities is a thorny issue for some. If you're concerned about it there are free tools that you can get that have keyword density on them. Keyword Discovery is one but others are available too. You need to research to find the best.

I guess if you want to you can do some sort of split test. Put up a home page with density 2%, then increase to 3%, then 4% and so on. See if there's any difference. I wouldn't go much above 5% myself but if you are you are using a small site or blog you might want to experiment for yourself, see what happens.

    i,

I am a newbie and I am not sure if this is the place to ask this question.

I have started my first website (on wordpress). I created some keyword targeted posts. There is a peculiar Problem I am facing.

The thing is that my TAG page is getting indexed in Google very fast..like in a snap and starts ranking for the keyword in top 100 but the actual post that should be ranking does not exist in the top 1000 results (as per Market Samurai)........I have observed this over the past few days now.

P.S. The posts have been indexed in Google and I have seen this for 3 keywords now.

Can you please help me as to where am I going wrong.?????????

I have personally seen sites with 15% keyword density get penalized by Google before. Once I reduced density down to 4% for the primary keyword and submitted a reconsideration to Google, telling them please ignore the fact that the previous webmaster was an idiot, the site jumped up to page 1 in a couple of weeks.

Thnx for the reply arnold but the fact is that I have just started with my website and I have done absolutely no backlinking to any page or post...It just fails me as to why the tag page ranks 26th in google results (phrase match) and the actual posts is nowhere in the top 1000 results.... (as per market samurai)

Analyze the top 10 for your KW and see what KWD they have. Stay within those percentages. Every niche is different.

    hey buddy,

concept of keyword density is very clear that above the 2% keyword there is keyword density and more than 5% keyword there is keyword stuffing...

Higher than 5% will be keyword stuffing.I keep it lower than 5% (max 7%) and it works great for me.

3% is optimum. Remeber that you are writing for both Google and the reader. Remember also that readers, when they are looking for something particular, only scan articles, they are typically not going to read every single word. They want information, not an article that has has a keyword stuffed 10 times in a 100 word article.
