What is the importance of Page rank ?

I heard this rumour a while back too. However many sources are saying that this untrue and rumours started as a result of the toolbar being updated and the page rank not showing for a few days. Whatever the case this shouldn't stop websites from trying gaining backlinks from related sites to increase traffic and a higher position in Google.

 

If google stop updating PR imagine what will happen to SEO! Till date it is getting links from relevant high PR+some socializing help us to rank sites. If they started something else has authority index(like DA, PA etc) then there could be havoc for existing SEO strategy. "Gaming the Google" - is one word G doesn't like.

 

Lets get things into perspective. Google will never get rid of Page Rank as that is how the search engine function. What was rumoured is hiding the Page Rank toolbar so people cannot view it to stop spamming. However this should stop nothing as people don't exchange links etc to gain a good Page Rank (or at least they shouldn't). They should do it to gain a higher level of traffic and position in Google for their search terms they are targeting.

 

If PR is hidden then how to get quality links? Are we going to fight with air?

 

There's no doubt it would be difficult if true (but its nothing more than a rumour at the moment, which I doubt will be true).

However, the best websites are those that you can easily find on Google for search terms similar to your own, so you should target those. You can also look at who is at the top and use tools such as majesticseo and find out who is linking to them and making them successful.

 

PageRank is one of 200+ signals Google takes into account to rank a site. It probably matters as far as one's search engines ranking is concerned, but I don't think it matters that much.
Google has not updated Toolbar PageRank for a while, and maybe it never will. It looks like Google is trying to find a substitute for PR, because taking into consideration how the web is changing, with semantic + social search and all, link-based signals appear inaccurate and unreliable now.

 

Page Rank is a massive factor in the ranking of a website. With a limited amount of On Page SEO. Google stands apart from from other search engines with its Page Rank. To lose it would be Google losing everything its about!

 

As of now, i personally think PR is just to show you are a trush worthy website. I would trust information from a PR 8 website, but from a PR 0 or PR 1 i might look around a little longer to find a more "trust worthy" source.
