Let me clarify the question. Let's say we have 2 sites that want to rank for "widgets." Let's say site A gets 100 PR 5 links WITHOUT the anchor text "widgets." And let's say site B gets 20 PR 5 links WITH the anchor text "widgets." All else being equal, which one will rank highest for "widgets"?
Putting certain anchor text to your link is like saying what's the name of your site, how would the world know what's your site all about when you are not mentioning it?. In that 100 links, you will use other anchor text or just url?
Link Anchor Text You probably see this a lot where people use "Click here" or "Learn more" as the linking text. This is great if you want to be ranked high for "Click Here". But if you want to tell the search engine that your page is important for a topic, than use that topic/keyword in your link anchor text. It’s much more descriptive (and relevant) to say “learn more about {keyword topic}†Warning: Don’t use the EXACT same anchor text everywhere on your website. This can sometimes be seen as search engine spam too.
Without a doubt, using the anchor text "widgets" will rank you higher for "widgets". Anchor text are very important in ranking for any keywords. Google ranks keywords based on both content on the site and by using anchor text. I have always ranked quicker and higher with anchor text than relying just off my content.
