wait till the article on your site gets indexed by google, THEN submit it to the article directories. this way google will know your site has the original content and will not penalize your site for duplicate content.

You should probably spend the time and write a different version for your site. I have seen many instances where the article directory will outrank the original version on the source website. Even if you wait until it gets indexed first. Put detailed version on your site and distribute a watered down version.

It is OK but to avoid spamming related issues, i can suggest you to don't submit the full article in article directories. Just submit 1 to 2 paragraphs and keep a link to your site to read full article.

It’s good that you are posting your article on your website before rolling it across different directories...But you see, this technique has lost much of its potency....I’d not want you to except fireworks outta it.

What you can instead do is...publish the article on your website and then promote it via social networks, bookmarking sites, communities etc.
In a way, this becomes a blog...you may even try guest blogging. The technique has great potential!

in that case, google will not penalize the original content website.. google is very smart, google knows who had posted the content first and later...
so it might be in SANDBOX
Remember Content is king, do not use the same content again and agian in different locations... Keep your content different for article directories...
    Best of luck

This is good advice. However you can and should make a few changes to the articles before you submit them to the article directories.

Google is very smart, if you are posting same article in your website as well as in article directories then at the time of crawling it can smell something fishy and that could have a negative impact on your SEO results.
