What is the Google API?

    I've come accross this term quite a bit and have no idea what it is and how it benefits a website.

    Can you give me a definitive description and what good it will do my website.:)

    I'm not sure but you serve for example search service like your service via Google. You can customize lookings.

    google API means you can use google utilities such as map, blogs, etc. via your web application.

    The google API basiclly lets you pull data that google have and show it on your application or site.

    API = Application Programming Interface :)

    First what is an API. Laymen example.

    Say you have a software for creating Icons over the internet.
    You can provide an API, or an entry to your software from the end, which another Website can use to create a similar software on his website.

    Google has a lot of goodies and has APIs for it.

    The simple search box that you can provide on your website used to be an API before it was provided by Google as a script.

    Eg http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/search/

    Digital point created a search using the API.
    Digital Point Keyword suggestion uses Overture API.

    Another great example of an API are the facebook application that are developed by outsiders.
