It depends very much on where the theme was built, how complex it is, how long it took, the availability of comparable themes/templates, what it's worth to the author and how exclusive you want it to be. Some very professional looking themes are available for free but you then have the "same as everybody else" commonality. If I want a one-off template here in the UK I'm happy to pay upwards of $100 because I know how much time & effort designers take. to make things work & be original.

Yeah... I wouldn't pay more than $50 for a pre-made template that was available for anyone to download, but in the case of a custom theme or template I would expect to pay at least $250-$2k or more, depending on the complexity of the layout, sub-page alterations, etc.

You can get a good idea of what the market will bear by reviewing www.templatemonster.com.

    Good points from pod there.

I'd also bear in mind the amount of support that's offered with the theme/template. For novices with little or no experience what will it cost for help & support mods/hacks to the template/theme? What level of support is there? Often you get what you pay for so when "support" is a rarely-updated forum with "RTFM" as the common answer then it might be worth extra $$ for themes/templates for that extra peace of mind :)
