I know everybody cites their links as being permanent.... but has anyone thought what this means? Does it mean 10 years, 20 years or 100 years or longer. Let's say you "link" somehow becomes valuable wouldn't the permanent obligation be something of a liability for your grand kids. Why would it ever end... For this reason My permanent links will last 20 years. Besides, why should I deny my kids a renewal? Thoughts welcome...
this has been discussed previously too.. Permanent link = till the directory/site lasts Can be 1 year, 10 years or 20 years.. But give atleast 1 year.
If your going to offer one time fee listings - my suggestion would be don't use the term permanent - use one time fee instead. Or if the listing is for 20 years just state 20 years in your guidelines and put an expirey date in the listing. Then have a good set of submission guidelines and terms of service which clearly state your policies. Permanent to me means just that - PERMANENT. People always seem to want to attach their own meaning to words. Here is a nightmare scenario to think about - Lets just say for example that business dot com offered permanent listings. What do you think would happen if the directory went under? With all those major businesses listed in that directory there could be a line of them to sue for the return of their listing fees plus possible punitive damages.
till the directory ceases to exist unless you get to an agreement with the owner, for him to move it along with him
Excelllent Point! If there are 20,000 listings a class action attorney would love the case. Even worse, how about if you forgot and let the domain registration expire. Legal boy would take you apart with tool kit.
Exactly my point. If your promising a service for a fee you better be prepared to deliver on that service. So if you're saying permanent listings you have a very long term obligation in my opinion because attorneys won't be so loose in their interpretations of what permanent means.
A significant percentage of websites (as with any small business) do not last the first year and an even larger percentage do not last over three years. I don’t get overly concerned about long term obligations.
permanent = the life of the directory...Some quick buck directory owners even don't renew their domain... it tells a story that you need find some reputed directory for "permanent links"
