Can someone please explain this to me.

What is the purpose of such a market? What is it for?

Why is this so popular and why do so many directories sell for so much. What is the reason behind it?

    Ie.

I want someone to convince me that I need a directory. Put it in a way that makes me think, wow what am I doing. I need a directory.

If you don't feel you need a directory you will not have the motivation to build and maintain a quality directory.

The directory market consists of directories mainly for gaining the back links as it

will provide webmasters with increase in SERPS with gaining more back links

So nowdays each and every one is starting a directory to gain some quick money by back links

Also there only some few quality directories left whose links are of high quality(Not DMOZ)

My point is you start a directory because you feel you have something to offer. If you want us to convince you to do it then it probally is not for you. Their are already too many half hearted directories.

I want to know what the market actually is. I just fail to see why they become of such value.

Are directories actually for people? Or are they just to please SE

Because the most important SEO practice is building links with good anchor text... and directories provide that the best way

There is a short, very simple answer to that. You don't need a directory!

Because Google loves back links, so people are forced to compete for them. :)

The actual value of 99% of all directories is pretty low. Most directories fail to achieve any intended goal, and at most make very few $$ in submissions.

PPC ads on directories pay pretty poorly, and even sponsored link sales pretty much suck.

However!! IF, and that is a big IF. If you dedicate loads of time and money into a directory. Make it something original, and outside the normal directory box, you can do quite well with one. You have to market it correctly, and then provide search engines with something other than listings that every other directory already has. Build something high quality and unique, and focus on gaining visitors OTHER than webmasters. if you can manage that, you will have a winner.

If you already have a website, and are looking for a way to get backlinks to it, then a directory can be useful there as well. You can allow users to list a site in your directory as long as they backlink to your primary site.

My 2 cents anyway. What the hell do I know about directories anyway? LOL

    Directory never die :D
I sell directory script since 2000, starting from general directory and now focus on niche directory such as hotel directory, golf directory, health care directory, and much more. There're so many people out there that have a brilliant idea.

What is not covered enough in this forum is a niche directory, they provide real content for human. While the general directory seem targeting to search engine to increase popularity.

if you are just getting into the business to make quick cash ... than i suggest you don't.... but if you think you need a directory to put your other websites to the top.... and are really motivated ... than you can come and build a quality directory :)

its all about the quality of the directory ... age of directory also plays a role ... directories i think is a never ending business because you can never get ENOUGH backlinks you know :p
