link farm is a program where you use automated software to provide a ton of reciprocal links through your website. A directory is a website where you submit a link to your website to theirs, and they review your site and incude a link to you.

A link farm consists of sites that link to other sites for the sole purpose of increasing their link popularity score and normaly created by programs. Links that are totally irrelevant. Unlike in links directory are human edited and most are with quality contents.

the difference lies in the objective behind the existance..

link farms have the sole purpose of adding links (and lots of them) with no contents and no categorizations..

where as directories are made with the purpose of presenting the visitor with carefully placed sites based on categories and mostly after they have been varified...

Digital Co-op is automated and most people don't consider it to be a link farm.

Yahoo and Google will penalize you if you get links too fast. But if you wait a while you won't be penalized by Yahoo but google is too smart for that.

If the link farm is referring to FFA links, then I don`t think that it is worth it. I accidentally joined one without knowing, and am still paying the price for it by having to delete myself out of the mailing lists, etc. As far as I can see, there is no relevant back links also.

A link farm is basically an auction place for links where you trade links mainly for increasing your link popularity with zero quality control almost all the time.

I've heard that directories can be considered link farms by the SEs and that they are beginning to de-value links coming from them - anyone know if there is any truth to this?

    two main differences IMO

    1) Directories (the good ones at least) are well categorized - link farms are just pages of links
    2) Directories are (normally) human edited so need to review the submissions & accept/deny it - link farms are free for all (FFA) links that anyone can submit there link to and its instantly made live with no review.
