Hi can anyone tell me what is the difference between the two? Should I buy a vpn to access sites anonymously or just use a free proxy?

VPN gives you shared or dedicated IP address of server which are you using with your VPN provider. It is much safer because have high level of encryption. Depending on PPTP, L2TP or Open VPN encryption could be from 128 to 4096 bits. So with VPN you can be highly protected and safe to surf anonymous and the best thing is that VPN providers mostly dont have provider logs so there will be no trace of your connecting.
