As Wikipedia explains: SEM is "a form of Internet marketing that seeks to promote websites by increasing their visibility in search engine result pages (SERPs)," while viral marketing refers "to marketing techniques that use pre-existing social networks to produce increases in brand awareness or to achieve other marketing objectives (such as product sales) through self-replicating viral processes."

Viral Marketing is marketing via social networks, web 2.0 methods. (such as Youtube, etc)

SEO is rarely refered to as "marketing" but thats all it is. Internet marketing. You market a website to search engines in hopes if getting them to result higher up.

For Search engine marketing, think page content, keywords, visibility in key locations, linking strategies to raise search engine visibility.

For viral marketing, think more of exposure in places from which you expect your site/link to be referred to others, putting your information in places where you actually never touch, as in referring your info to other places by other people who see your information - 5 people transmit/transfer to 20, those 20 to 100, those 100 to 400, etc.

viral marketing is a marketing technique through the social networks.
Whereas, SEM is the marketing strategies through search engines such as google, yahoo, etc.

Viral marketing can get you some links (if popular) which in turn help out in the search engines.
