A hostname is the name of a server. For example, you could name your first server; server1.yourdomain.com. A name server, is a server that you query for domain names. For example, instead of remembering http://66.249.90.104 for google, you can just type in the name google.com, and the name server tells it to go that the correct IP address to look for google's site.

hostname -> server name specified /etc/hosts
nameserver -> if you run DNS using bind, you will need to run nameserver
