What is the difference between forums and directories?

    Yes, both of them are good. Forums will be having more "content" than a directory. As per google is concerned the SE values content very much ("Similar content"). Websites with good quality and amount of content will carry more weightage in SERPs.

    Both directories and forums help in promoting your web site. You can add anchor text(keywords) as signature in forums.

    Yeah both forums and directories are helpful to promote the website. In these both way you can get traffic.

    A problem with forums is, your links gets aged and your posts goes into the archives! Directories, the links stay where they are (unless directory owners remove your link)

    Both of them good but the drawback for directory submission is that all your submission will undergo pending approval for review, but it is good as long as submitted to the right category. Forum is the one that I like most, a good source of backlink and traffic a long as you can make a good contribution to the related categories and related forum site as well.
