What is the difference between a VPS and a Dedicated Server?

I am currently on on a shared web hosting account for one of my websites (well they all are) but one is particular is growing steady and I would like to upgrade. I keep reading about VPS and Dedicated servers, but what is the difference between the two of them?
Are they as easy to manage as a shared web hosting account?

    Thanks!

Basically, VPS is made from a dedicated server. There are few virtualization types, you can google it...
Both will be as easier as shared hosting if you install cpanel on it. But if you want to save resources, then don't install it :D

    Depends on your website,
you can start with VPS. Guess it can cover your expectation.

Google is your friend, but here' a V brief explanation

    Dedicated Server
All the hardware (the whole machine) is dedicated to you. No-one else uses it except you

    VPS
Depends on the VPS software, but usually a hypervisor layer (software) sits on top of the hardware. It then allows the the owner of the server to partition portions of the hardware to an individual customer. They may be able to dedicate certain CPU cores for your exclusive use (or provide equal share), provide you with a certain amount of dedicated RAM, and some dedicated disk space. On this portion of hardware an operating system is then installed which is for your exclusive use as if it was a dedicated server.

VPS hypervisor software varies greatly in the dedicated resources that it can control and allow to be allocated. Some systems share a base operating system, some provide better VPS isolation than others, some allow better CPU management or RAM management and isolation (so another VPS "abusing" their CPU allocation will not affect you, while others aren't so good at this separation). Although there are technical differences, they all provide the management and dedicated operating system of a dedicated server, but with only a proportion of the underlying hardware being provided for your use.

No. A basic VPS (or dedicated server) comes with an operating system. You're responsible for sourcing, installing, and managing your own software (control panels, email, dns, ftp software). With shared hosting that's all taken care of by the host.

What you get with your VPS varies from host-to-host, package-to-package, and whether managment is offered or not.

No matter what, it is a different thing from shared hosting although you could replicate a shared hosting environment if that is what you wanted to do - you just have to know how to do it.

That is a very long and well written description To put it in more simpler terms Dedicated means the entire server is yours where as the VPS is still in away a shared host with more control and usually more space bandwidth and ram usage as for which one is easier to use it depends like it has been mentioned in here already with some software like cPanel they both can be fairly easy to run and it depends on whether or not you go with managed I would suggest you go with managed on either of them if you are not familiar with them at first and GOOGLE GOOGLE GOOGLE all the research material is out there for you right at your finger tips

    Hi,
To make simple VPS has most of the benefits that Dedicated server provides. If your online business is moderate better stick with VPS hosting, there is no necessary for dedicated servers for medium sized business.

Well, there's no need to take a direct jump for a dedicated server, you can consider VPS which are similar to a dedicated server but with limited
resources and at better price. Most webhost will offer you root/Admin access to your VPS hence you have total freedom and flexibility. If you start facing resource limitation on VPS then you can consider a dedicated server.
Regarding server management, you can search for managed hosting provider if you don't want to handle technical stuff related to your server.

a VPS is physically co-hosted on the same box as other VPSs, although it does have a complete virtual system of its own (as opposed to shared where all users are on the same system). dedicated means just that = you have your own physical box just for yourself.

    There's huge difference between both...
for eg,, dedicated server is a single hardware unit which can be only used by you. You are the owner of your dedicated box whereas VPS is low end hosting solution compared to dedicated server. VPSs have limited resources but you have full access to your server which is added benefit. If you are looking for low cost affordable solution then you can start with VPS which can be upgraded later for a dedicated server if required.
Managing VPS is not a big task. Control panel is recommended for a VPS/dedicated server for easy management. If you dont have sound knowledge of control panel or server management go with Managed Hosting service provider who will take care of your server.
