To keep things simple, here are a few pointers.. Panda: 1) Focuses on putting value on unique & high quality content, and eliminating spam content that provides little to no value. This includes weakly spun content, plagarized content, etc. Penguin: 1) Focuses on eliminating sites that are over-optimized for keywords. This includes keyword stuffing, & high density of backlinks using main keyword anchor text. 2) Put more restrictions on Exact Match Domain websites, who are purely create just to rank for a particular keyword. 3) Also are more strict on websites with too many affiliate links. Agreed. People forget they can still get good quality traffic from search engines like Yahoo and Bing and from others sites, sources, etc.
Google Panda algorithm mainly targets websites with low quality content. Content farms were hit the hardest by this algorithm. Even sites with duplicate contents from other site were penalized by Google. Penguin algorithm is mainly concentrates on the web spam. The websites which do not follow the quality guidelines of Google are penalized and demoted in the search engine rankings. Black hat techniques like keyword stuffing are looked down upon by this algorithm.
