What is the criteria for a good keyword?

I am looking at once again selecting some keywords for a new site of mine. I am using Gtrends SE, but was wondering what criteria will make a good keyword:

    - More than 100 searches per day?
    - Less than 30,000 phrase-matching results?
    - Ignore kw with less that 99 searches per day?
    - Ignore kw with more than 10,000,000 phrase-matching results in Google?

    Let me know your thoughts.

More than 200 searches, ignore high advertiser keywords, use relevant keywords.

The idea of a good keyword is relative.

For a person who has been in the industry for a fair amount of time, a keyword with less than 100 searches a day ( approximately 3,000 searches a month) may be nothing. To a person who has just joined the industry, a k/w with 3,000 searches a month and beatable competition is akin to gold.

Again some niches tend to convert better than others, so you have to take that into account while choosing your keyword.

Competition is a big factor because a majority of the people go the links that are 1 & 2 on the SERPS.

Your ideal keyword is something that has a decent number of searches along with competition that you can beat.

Gr8liveerpoolfan makes some good points. If your starting out you need to get traffic so find some with less sites listed for term. You can make muiple pages and use mutiple terms so getting listed for 10 terms that only have 50 page views a day still adds up and is better than nothing.

some people use KEI as a good measurement to compare the 'profitability' of keywords in any niche.

but just bear in mind, KEI is not decision making tool per se.

it's good for ideal comparison while considering both supply and demand factors.

check third link in my signature if u need keyword research service.

    cheers

I think you should try to go for related keywords from n/a traffic. N/A means the data is not available until next month. And most probably, with lowest competition level. A combination multiple top spot ranking for this keywords can get you some good traffic as well within shortest period of time.
