What is the best way to package and market artwork?

Does anyone have any experience in how best to present artwork online and market the same?

If someone has an original piece of art they have painted, should they sell that or should they make prints (copies) and, if the latter, what format? CD?

How is it best marketed? I know social networking and sites like deviantart help but I have heard they are inferior to having a strong personal website or gallery presence.

Any advice welcomed - but no guesswork please :D

    Hmm..no takers then?

I am advised that selling originals is the way to go and forget about prints.

This does not seem very lucrative though. I knew someone who was in the art business (offline) and he considered those who did not allow their oriignal artwork to be used to create prints as missing out on a lot of money (he was in the greeting card business).

Are there any services online that do a sort of Print-on-demand for cards rather than books? So an artist agrees to allow them to copy their original art (maybe to a certain limited number) and take a share? That sort of thing...

    Thoughts?
