agree that html is very easy to learn, i took 2 week to learn html (every 2 hour).

start from w3schools.com (The ost simply and most easy to understand) then purchase E-book from website like sitepoint.com to learn More

Honestly, I self taught myself HTML back when I was 13-14 (12 years ago) and have just played around since then. (Same thing with photoshop, php, flash, etc.......)

Just trial and error and play around.

    W3Schools is good.

Dreamweaver is a good way to learn how things work as well. Create in Display mode then switch over to Code and you can see how it all comes together.

I got a book "Head First Html with CSS and Xhtml" very good - leads you through all the steps of setting up a site from scratch rather than just teaching you the functions of the various tags
    CSS is the hard bit!

I learned the hard way but the quickest way is to buy Dreamweaver or Microsoft Expressions.. it helps you code with a list of options.

I can help you learn the basics.. just PM me.

HTML is like the basic code of all website. But your question could be answered two ways. It just really depends on what you count as a good site. You could use HTML and CSS and create a simple and clean good website. Or you could design page layouts in photoshop (and probably other programs, i just use photoshop) and maybe integrate flash graphics. I believe its not good to make a website comletely with flash, for it hurts SEO. But basically, you could just design a page layout in photoshop, slice it how you want it, it generates the code for you. Then, you must use your HTML and CSS knowledge to edit the code to your desire and your needs. If your going to develop a wordpress theme or other PHP pages/sites you also will need the knowledge of PHP. HTML and CSS should be fine unless you want to make a career of Web Design.

I first learnt it by writing out all the code in notepad and buying a cheap html book by o'neil, i think. But once I learned it properly I stuck to using Dreamweaver and learnt CSS aswell.

There's nothing wrong with using Dreamweaver as a text editor. There's a lot of nice features you won't find in other editors. As long as you're handwriting your site you're going to receive the same output as anything else. So where's the mistake in that?

Using notepad plus dreamweaver to learn XHTML is a good idea.as It really helps you in remembering the syntax and it helps you with the code.

I have nothing against using Dreamweaver or other advanced text editors once you actualy understand the code.

But this guy needs to learn HTML and CSS. Dreamweaver won't do that for him.

Plus on more thing, Dreamweaver outputs completely unsemantic, invalid and bloated code...

For me front page was very helpful to know Html, because once you do everything in the front end, you the html code at the back end, but I seldom see employers asking for you to know front page.

    ABSOLUTELY the best way.

That is how I learned it along with an out of print book called "HTML Complete", which was written before CSS was around, so is now archaic.

Just like dreamweaver frontpage puts out a lot of junk html code that you just dont need. Plus, the buttons and adding images makes pages very sluggish. Never use frontpage, notepad is better. Besides, frontpage is dead anyway, microsoft came out with a new web design program. I wouldn't get that either.

    Here are my humble suggestions.

    1. Get a copy of notepad++ ( visit www.portableapps.com for a free copy)
Visit w3schools as many have mentioned before.

    2. Follow the step by step tutorials on w3schools by typing the lessons into notepad++.

    3. Practice, practice, practice.

The great thing about notepad++ is that it highlights the tags and will show any errors in your code. In addition to html, notepad++ allows you to code php and css.

Once you get up to speed with some basic coding, I would suggest that you visit a few websites and view and study the source code to see how they are put together.

Hope this info helps and good luck.
