What is the best way to do email marketing?

I run a B2B business providing services like consulting, etc. I want to do bulk emailing with my official ID, but do not want to get banned or blocked for spamming. I was suggested to use a arpReach with SMTP server like http://www.massmailservers.net/services/semi-dedicated-smtp-mail-server/

I was also suggested by someone other means...I am confused. Can someone tell me how to best go about it?

My volumes are like 1,000 a day for first 1 month. Then 10,000 a day. Then, more.

    Thanks in advance,

    Doris

Doris, from my experience, no matter what you do, if you send bulk emails your IPs will eventually get banned, blocked or marked as spammy.
The problem with bulk emailing is it is not who sends the email that matters, but rather how it is being sent. If you send an email to 1000 recipients a day and, let's say, it will go 150 yahoo recipients, that email will most likely end up in the yahoo spam boxes, unfortunately.

You see, they really don't care if your subscribers double opted-in when they subscribed for your emails alerts. That thing is just a formality to them. They want to stop spam. And they will most definitely view your email as such.

The most practical way to resolve this issue would be sending out an email to 20-50 recipients every 1-2 hours. If you have the means for automating this process, I'd suggest you should go that way. Let some software shoot out an email to 20-50 recipients every 1-2 hours and you will be in a much better shape, than trying to send it out to 1,000, let alone, 10,000 recipients at once. At the end you will be very disappointed with the outcome.

Build a Quality list and start adding autoresponders to it, dont hardsell with email, conversions will be to low to make the effort count.

There are lots of companies online that send MILLIONS of email daily to their customers/subscribers, yet their emails do not ever go to the spam/junk folder. You need to target and gain the trust of the big name email clients such as Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail/Outlook, etc... There is a process with each of them to have your IP/domain whitelisted. I remember building an emailing script some years ago that scraped email addresses from a specific social site, added them to a MYSQL database then sent out an email to each of the addresses. In theory, this was spam. All my mail was going to spam folders until I contacted both Hotmail and Gmail and they pointed me to various forms which I had to fill out to get the process done.

Ethically and use an auto responder like Aweber or Mail Chimp.

Hello Doris. I'm not sure if you've found a solution yet but if you want some help or advice about ARPReach then it's the system I've been using, and I've also used half a dozen other email marketing tools - both self-hosted and with service providers such as aweber. There is a Facebook group for ARPReach users - just search for it and you should find it. There's a bunch of enthusiasts in there with good experience of using ARPReach and other email systems. As for some of the comments that have been made, then all I'll say is that there would be no difference between sending 1000 emails out at a time using an SMTP provider, or sendign them out 50 an hour over an extended period. If the content of the email is the same in both cases then the amount of spam complaints will be the same. The most important thing you will need to do is to warm up your SMTP service gently. Amazon SES for instance only extend a certain limit and it takes some time to build up to sending bigger volume. This is done so that they can check that any new person who is using their service proves themselves to be a trusted marketer before they allow large volumes. Other things you will need to do is to make sure you set up your DKIM and SPF records properly. With ARPReach then you can set up multiple external SMTP service providers so although you may not be able to send out 1,000 per day from the very beginning with Amazon SES, it should be possible for you to divide your emails into blocks and send say a few hundred with them, and another block with other SMTP providers until you've been given higher sending limits. That's the advantage that ARPReach has over say aweber. If deliverability through one SMTP provider drops, then you can switch to any number of different ones. Whereas with aweber, GetResponse etc then if they run into problems then you're stuck with it. I know in the last 10 days aweber has crashed a few times and has caused all sorts of problems for marketers trying to send out campaigns. Good luck with it all..

I should add that of course you can also use your own local host for sending mail, and depending on your hosting account this should allow you to send between 50-100 emails per hour. Inside ARPReach there is a throttle setting, so you can set the maximum number of emails to be attempted to be sent per hour so you don't go over the limits set by your local host (or the limits set by say Amazon SES or other external SMTP provider if you are using these services).

I suggest you go with http://mailchimp.com/ or http://www.getresponse.co.uk/ or another company similar. Creating your own email server is a lot more complicated than you may think...and takes a long time...if your emails are double opt-in then your best bet would be one of the providers I mentioned.

You can easily waste thousands of dollars setting up an email rig with the wrong provider.
