    Traffic, and lots of it.
Depending on how dumb your audience is, those awful inline ads can work well. Failing that, a few well placed threads with subtle affiliate links could work.
But without traffic, then it will all go nowhere.

I am a Google Adsense user and I would recommend it.
I don't know much about AdBrite.

Honestly...wouldn't recommend placing inline ads. Hugely off-putting to the majority of those considering joining a community. I'd rather sacrifice minimal earnings to have quality members.

@Tashan007: New forums generally don't make much through serving Ads. To maximise your earnings you'll have to carefully place your ads, for example ads after the first post, in the top right of the page, in the footer etc... Basically you want to put ads in areas the user will regularly move their mouse to.

Have a look at Advertisements in phpBB3.

I hate inline text ads, but my job is to make money. I've got a forum with lots of really dumb (or so it seems) under 14 year olds, and they'll click anything that's underlined :D

If it's making money, then it's working.

Fair enough, I guess that's where you and I are different.

The community I run is also seemingly populated by clueless 14 year olds, amongst the handful of quality members. I do it for the sake of providing a service, allowing different forum admins to check out each other's forums, share their opinions and join each other's forums etc etc... where (as you say) you're at it to make money.

Honestly I wouldn't consider the time and effort required to run a successful community worth the trickle of income that would come from ads. But, I suppose something is better than nothing

So you're in it for that fuzzy feeling that comes from being a valuable contributor to "the internet"? :p ;)

I think we need to bring this baby back on topic ...
    :)
