This question has been answered gazzilion times. Please search, before you post. Anyways, my favorite in AVG AntiVirus. It's the top downloaded (anti-virus) application on download.com and filehippo.com

Kaspersky is the best detection rate by far.

NOD32 is the lightest with good detection rate

No anti-virus can be the best.
take for example, AVG's emulator is not able to decrypt changes in entry points in an executable. If you have a detected malware and open it in Olly Debugger, and change the entry point and imagebase. Let's say your image base is 00002431, and you change it to 00001000, your application will have a new signature according to AVG because it cannot detect the change. If AVG tags the header however, advanced encryption will be necessary to bypass anti-virus companies.

NOD32 for a lightweight anti virus, and very good at detecting viruses, trojans, spyware, etc, also nod32 may be harder to use for noobs!

BUT! if you want maximum protection get Kaspersky , which IMO is the best anti virus out there, updates hourly etc, but i dont like it because its a little harsh on my resources, about 3 times more usage then nod32.

I also used kaspersky when my computer was infected with a virus that can't be removed by Norton and AVG.
