Notepad++ is simple to use, works for a large array of languages, uses nice colour coding. I would recommend it, especially as its free and open source too.

notepad++ , it's free and it's the best thing you can use so there's really no point in paying, you can make a donation to the team if you like :)

Thanks for providing the list of HTML editors.
Was looking for something in replacement for HTML-Kit
HTML-Kit doesn't allow amendments directly in the preview screen (which directly writes to the underlying HTML). NVU does a better job in that (on my first experience with it). :)

I have not read anyone mentioning Kompozer. It is a good free software. But it depends on what you what to do as far as a web page is concerned. If you are Newbie and all you want to do is Squeeze Page, or an non-complex web page, I will go for Kompozer.

Personally I'd stump up the cash and buy Dreamweaver, it's the best . Nothing compares and you'll save so much time it'll be worth it..

I would say if you do have the cash, use dream weaver. Its more than worth the money in the end.

If you're on a Mac, I strongly suggest Panic! Coda. It's simply the best I've ever used although it comes at a small price. Uncluttered, great UI, and very easy to use.

Notepad is 100% free (if you have windows) it is in my mind the best html editor. Dreamweaver is a wysiwyg tool i.e it writes its' own code and you just drag and drop etc. Although it does have a 'code' tab it isn't really a HTML editor.

I have heard of using Notepad as a html editor. Do you have a place I can get instructions or step-by-step as to how to do this?

    I am interested.

    Thanks,
    Matthew
