What is the Best Strategy for Article Marketing for building backlinks?

So we all hear about how writing articles on article directories and other sites can help build backlinks...but what is the best strategy to go about this?
I guess I am looking for the answer to 3 questions:

    1. How many articles should you submit? And to how many directories? Should you be concerned about doing too many at once?

    2. What is a good way to be organized? (Keep track of articles and backlinks you have built)

    3. Who are the "article marketing experts"? Can you point me to any blogs/resources that have good solid information on the way to do this effectively?

    Thanks!

try to post your article on your blog. submit only to those well-known article directories. or ask some blogger to post an article to their blog. but don't forget to put a link pointing to your site.

I don't agree with rachel's first comment 'try to post your article on your blog'. If you're going to submit an article to article directories, I wouldn't risk duplicate content issues by putting that article on your own website too. Even if you post the article on your site first, a more authoritative website could trump your website and lead search engines to think it is the original source.

I submit my articles to many article directories and it works quite well. I just make sure to vary anchor text so that I am not suddenly getting hundreds of links with the exact same link.

You should develop a regular schedule of submitting one or two articles per week....or whatever pace you can manage. The benefits of articles just adds up as you submit more articles.

To stay organized, just submit one article at a time. Then keep all of those older articles on file in case you find a new article directory down the road. You don't really need to record each and every time your article gets published.

I did not know that but you might also try posting the full article on your blog first and then submitted only part of it (i.e. 4 out of 5 paragraphs) to the directories to try to avoid duplicate content issues.

I only submit to two directories and goarticles.com gets indexed very quickly from my experiences.

Google can detect partial duplication of pages... In fact they have gotten very good at it the last year or so. They even have patents on doing so.

I would recommend that ALL articles on your blog be unique. Never submit those to article submission sites.

If you want to submit an article on the same topic then write a new article from scratch. Don't take your blog article and change a few words in every sentence and switch the order of the paragraphs/sentences... Submit the new article to a single site.

sound advice. Always wrangle your article before each submission in order to make it unique. Otherwise you're wasting your time (apart from any 'passing traffic' it might generate)

    Chelle,

I'm actually running an experiment now to test how much article marketing can increase your rankings. I'm just creating two unique articles per day (5 days per week) for 2 months. Each day i'm submitting them to a directory. One article per directory. I am using about 20 - 30 good directories and then repeating the cycle. One unique article per directory.

I am also using a technique of mine which gets each article indexed in Google within hours, once it has been approved. This is vital, and never fails. Many people make the mistake of submitting and forgetting. Big mistake. Some articles may not get found for ages, which means NO backlink!

I'm only about 10 days into it so far, but it's showing good signs at the minute. Once i've completed the experiment, if the results are good, I'll be creating a FREE eBook that will expose my technique and show people exactly how to increase their rankings using article marketing.

Hmmm Let me guess... You're going to link to that article from a web site that is already indexed and which gets crawled frequent? Or you going to add it to your RSS feed w/ embedded links to the article in the description?
