Hi guys, I work for a pilot aptitude tests prep. company. It currently has a website. We are trying to increase the ranking of our website in the main search engines such as Google and Yahoo. Is there any tips about search engine optimization? What is the best starting point? Any commend is welcomed. Thx!
Learning SEO is a lifetime journey. With the way things change so quickly, you really need to stay on top of the latest news in the industry. Step 1: Google is a big player, so I would subscribe to Matt Cutts' blog. Step 2: Focus on giving search engines what they want. And trust me, what they want is not some programmer trying to manipulate their rankings. What they want is for people to search for something, and find what they were looking for. And ultimately, Matt Cutts has stated that things like meta data become irrelevant when compared to high quality content. Step 3: Use Google analytics. Everytime you make a change or add a page to your site, you'll want to know if it helped your traffic. So put Google analytics into your site. It's free and it's a great tool to help you monitor how people are finding your site, what keyword they're using, what links they're following, and much, much more. Step 4: Get into your customers' heads You must understand how people might search for you using a search engine. So sit down with your customers and find out all the ways and reasons they searched for your company. Ask your customers, if they had to describe your company, what words would they use? Those become your keywords. Then create pages for each of those keywords that focus on providing high quality information that is informative to people searching for your product. Those pages should answer the fundamentally questions people have about your service, and provide the background information they would need when researching to buy a product like yours. Each page should be worthy of people linking to it, without you having to ask them. So don't focus on what your company offers, and don't make it a spotlight of how great you are. Provide the content, and then add a call to action at the bottom of each page, offering people a chance to contact you for more information about your company. Do that for about 30 pages of content, and you'll be well on your way. Of course, that's just my opinion. I'm sure there's others. Good luck and keep it real!
First, notice the links at the bottom of each reply. These are links. The green text is "anchor text" and should match the keyword that you are going after. You need ~200 of these links, so keep asking questions and responding the the posted replies. When you get to ~50 posts, add this link information in you SIG section of DP "User CP" above. Then start the On-Page SEO (see http://open-site.org/Computers/Internet/Promotion). You start with the home page and as you get to a SEO element (topic), ask questions about it here.
Start with the on page SEO of getting your target keywords in page titles, page descriptions, H1 tags, and text. Then go out and get some links with variations of those keywords. That will get you 80% of the way there.
Make sure you have a lot of quality back links, you can get these by posting on forums and submitting your site to quality directories. Also make sure the links you are back linking are do follow.
You should start with keyword research. Identify the most searched keywords and analyze the competition for each. Then optimize your site for a mix of both head keywords and long-tail keywords. Optimize each page for 2-3 keywords max. After optimizing the on-page factors, start getting backlinks from content-specific, relevant sites. Good luck!
Search engine optimization requires patience and it takes time to rank your site, better start your optimization at your own site, focus on title, keywords, description, and meta tags.
