Currently using Kaspersky. Seems to be doing the job rather well.

Follow this link G4TV Tech Support... All are FREE...

Look down the list for Web based Virus and Trojan Scanners... Run the first 3 Online scans...i.e. ( Panda Active Scan , Trend Micro House Call Virus Scanner & BitDefender Free On-line Virus Scan)...

I'd also download Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad-Aware SE, Ewido Security Suite and maybe A-Squared... Install them then look for updates and run them...

You can find these on the same site under Adware, Spyware, Trojan, and Hijacker Scanners...

Windows Defender is good - it runs silently in the background too.

I think reinstall the OS will be the best way. I haven't seen a spyware program that can remove spyware completely

I am guessing that the type of sites you visit can be a part of the issue along with "free" downloads.
Saying that, I have found spybot to be pretty good, I have worked on a few computers with loads of spyware and usually a trojan or two.

I use Active Scan Pro from http://www.pandasoftware.com. I like it because it is fully web based and you don't have to install any software on your machine. It's also works brilliantly. Whenever my machine starts to act all wierd I fire it up, and sure enough I've picked up a spyware or virus.

This software is also great for removing viruses and spyware etc...
