What is the best slideshow software?

Many sites have great looking slideshows which really make the site and info
    quite appealing.

What is the best slideshow software both free and paid for?
Is paid for software better than the free scripts?

As a side note my coding skills are very average.

Thanks GWiz but I guess my actual question should have been...

"I realise there is a ton of great software out there on how to build a slideshow, but which do people on this forum recommend?"

I greatly value the opinion of people on this forum and so figured someone may be able to point me towards the one they use.

I'm not after an 'image gallery software' but a slideshow generator. Say if I was looking to create some sales banners that rotate.

I don't think they have created the best slideshow software yet.

Paid scripts are using (as far as I found out) the same "background" scripts (like jQuery cycle). Only the style is done more professional (most times) to fit e.g. into a WP theme or somewhere else, and maybe some code was added/modified.

    That's my opinion

Thanks guys. I wish I new more about jquery and java script but its not the case.
It looks like a paid option would be my best bet. Something that makes creating a slideshow a 'drag and drop' act ie nice and simple.

Is there any simple drag and drop type slideshow creators? Once again, not to create a gallery but a banner slideshow for promoting products.

By drag and drop I mean a software that makes life really simple. Just trying to find something
that a non techie can understand easily.

Or is it best just to run a contest and ask someone to create a slideshow and then get them to
    upload it to a site?

That website you pointed me to is pretty much what I am after. A slideshow creator that rotates
a series of either images or used as a selling tool. Is there software that creates those slideshows?
Or do you have to code them by hand?

Do you mean a Windows program where you just put your pictures into the "program"? Then it generates your "slideshow"?

There are a lot PHP/(X)HTML slideshows out there that you can install on your webserver.

Hey CSM. You have been very helpful so thanks for that.

Yes I was hoping for something that has really simple instructions which can largely create the slideshow for me.
Something like Youtube where I create the video (slideshow in this case) and then paste the code on my site.

    dojox.image.Gallery
    dojox.layout.RotatorContainer
    dojox.widget.AutoRotator
    dojox.widget.Pager
    dojox.widget.Wizard
    dojox.widget.Roller

theres about a gazillion of these in some form of javascript. and about a billion in flash.

a slideshow is pretty simple to create in Javascript or flash just by adding and dropping DOM nodes or MovieClips.

    Hi Guys

Thanks for your help. The kizoa site looks very comprehensive for uploading photo image galleries. Some
pretty incredible effects on that too.

Looks like javascript is the way to go. I'll try to find something in that area since there are millions of these things.
I never knew when I started this thread that it was so elusive to get a simple piece of software that does it for you.
Perhaps there's a great opportunity for talented programmers to come up with something simple that people
    can add to their websites.

Well, I better code that myself instead of doing it like "youtube" and embedding something. I want full control on my sites ;)
