I am planning to start a small online business in selling herbal products.
What is the best shopping cart that I should chose?

You can check the listed ones here: http://opensourcecms.com/ There is also e demo for each one. As far as my observings, osCommerce, phpShop and Zen Cart are among the most popular.

If you need a quick set up, you can use godaddy's (since it's installed already after you buy it). There are some limitations to the design template however.

Cube Cart is quite good for smaller businesses, and is not too expensive.

I've been looking at Avactis myself and after reading threads here and at sitePoint, I'm leaning heavy on Avactis. That's my 2 cents..

I would suggest oscommerce. Have a look at this to see how you can make a very professional online store.

I am biased, since I work on these carts regularly.

    Thanks

Depending upon what features you want your website to have, there's several shopping cart platforms:

    cs-cart
    Magento
    Shopify
    Bigcommerce
    Volusion
    PrestaShop
    3dcart
    zen-cart
    oscommerce
    opencart
    ubercart
    cubecart
    x-cart
    creloaded
    drupalecommerce
    joolma,virtuemart
    spreecommerce

the list goes on. Some are free (open source) while others are paid shopping cart solutions.

We have worked with a number of these carts and they all have their pros and cons. Here is an easy to use web cart comparison page thats updated constantly and pretty accurate: http://www.mailware.com/mailware/integration/cart-comparison/

Here's a similar thread discussing this stuff as well:

    Hi Friend,

Thats a great idea starting an ecommerce business online, High revenue earning platform. I would like to suggest 3 things for ecommerce as my experience will help you.

    1. If you are planning to buy a ecommerce script, then AJ Shopping Cart Software ,will be the right choice with plenty of user friendly facilities.

    2. If you worry about hosting issue, you can get Zscart - SaaS Ecommerce solution with easy monthly payment option and free trial too. you can make your shop with in five minutes.

    3. If you are looking for free source means, Zeuscart will be right choice. Highly downloaded open source script online.

Good luck ...Choose one for successful ecommerce business.

I highly recommend Shopify. In my opinion, the very best e-commerce platform available out there - specially if you're not exactly an experienced programmer!

You can also try it out for 30 days, for free - which is what I did.
If you'd like to give it a try, do use this referral link, please: http://shopify.com/?friend=albupele

If you are using Joomla Virtuemart an excellent choice. If you want to ship internationnally with different currencies, languages and tax rates I would go for Hikashop.
We've tested quite some shopping carts because we sell internationally with direct downloads, and after much consideration we've decided on Hikashop.
