They don't know. They're just parroting what they read somewhere while Justin Bieber was singing. They weren't really paying attention.

Typical DP poster who talks like he knows something but then shows his true, off colors by stating HTML is a programming language. It is not.
It's hard to ever trust DP posters to know anything.

They are too poor to pay attention. And based on what I see here, they will always be too poor to pay attention.

I would take a second look at .NET. It is an extremely easy-to-use, rapid development environment, much in the style of REALbasic. VB.NET retains a lot of the syntax, while bringing you (in my opinion) even more powerful features. Since almost all desktop applications should be distributed with an installer (setup program), the requirement of a runtime is really a non-issue. Your installer should install the necessary dependencies at the same time as your application—the user will never be the wiser.

.NET is not a programming language. That, and the fact you are answering a six-year old thread shows no one should pay any attention to you.

He doesn't set it up. He has his friends set it up for him. It is beyond his ken for him to set it up.

It really depends on what you want to do. If you are a web programmer it might make sense to learn PHP or C#.

In my opinion it depends what you are trying to do and how much time you have. In my experience, if you want a solid Rapid Application Development Environment with fool proof Debugging capabilities to create an Application quickly the Visual Studio Development Environment (C# / ASP.NET) tends to be a better choice. If you however have a bit more time and like using / reusing open source code, PHP seems to be a better choice since there is far more pre-written PHP code then there is for Microsoft .NET.
