    1) Define your needs
    2) Compare program options to needs
    3) Choose the program that does your job the way you want it done.

In my opinion, the best language for development is c# - using it within the silver light framework, you can easily move from web to desktop deployment with simple change of a couple lines of code. Java is also a best programming language for web development.:)

The fact that Microsoft is dumping Silverlight for the desktop should be reason enough to look elsewhere and remember to never trust Microsoft.

I think PHP and ASP.NET is the best today because of PHP is one of the most used and common programming language in the world. This open source language is flexible and simple to use and is a favorite amongst programmers.
ASP.NET:This is one of the most adaptable web languages and is compatible with other compiled languages like C, COBOL, VB, Jscript, and VBScript.

Fastest still in use - C. Fortran is used the most by engeneers. IDL is astronomers' fav. language. Perl has the biggest and most vast library for bioinformatics - bioperl. PHP is by far the best for web development. C# has the biggest array of awesome libraries of any OO language. These are just a few facts that I can mention in such a pointless thread without sounding trivial.

No language is the best programming language, it depends on your aim, your project's size, your platform, ... And about web development, PHP is the most popular language in linux and asp is the most popular one in windows.

If you want to build websites then javascript, php, sql. You can do almost anything with those three,
however there is no really great cash in them, unless you are outstanding at them.
If you want to get a job that pays good cash with the big guys,
then java, python or perl is really where the money is at!
Ask me my favorite then I would say javascript and extjs.

I seriously doubt most PHP developers have used Java. I've dabbled with Java and am strong with PHP and they are worlds apart in complexity etc.

Or are you making the noob mistake of thinking that when people talk about java they really mean javascript?
