depends on what u want to do with it...for example C++ is most powerful but takes much time most suitable for desktop apps.

whereas php, java and .net are more suitable for web programming, not as effiecne as C++ but that's not a a big problem on servers where you should have plenty of resources

Asking for the best web developing language is like asking a carpenter or auto mechanic for the best tool to build a house or repair an engine.

PHP doesn't run in the browser and Javascript doesn't run on the server. You need Javascript and a server-side language, at the very least, unless you have a static site.

Actually you can run it on the server and there's a push by some dev people to do that.

PHP is good as it is the most popular programming languages and most likely will suit your needs, and it is a good programming language to start learning from.

I entirely disagree. First, let me say Perl is my FAVORITE language. It's also the first language I learned. I've used it for over 12 years and continue to use it. However, it is a poor choice for web development. The only thing it has going for it these days is Catalyst. As far as CPAN goes...it's full of abandoned projects and modules that haven't been updated in years. Hands down the best general purpose web programming language would be PHP. It's easy, just as powerful, and currently the most popular (therefor highly supported and up to date classes/libs).

The only use I have for Perl now is when I'm making a Crawler, text processing tools, or scripts to run on my server.
