the industry standard is Adobe Illustrator. Basically, look at any actual corporate logo used by a real company for your samples.

Check out Adobe's website for a features overview and screenshots.....

I've used Inkscape in the past, and find it to be a very capable program. See www[dot]inkscape[dot]org

There are versions for Linux (I use Ubuntu), Mac, and Windows.

you cannot create a professional logo in photoshop - it is a photographic image manipulation program that works in pixels, not in vector.

Logos must be designed in vector - this is why Adobe creates Adobe Illustrator, this is its purpose. And for those who don't know, Adobe Illustrator has vector effects as well, lthough you don't use them in logo design.

You can import illustrator vector designs into Adobe Flash. This is a great function.

I said : You can import Adobe Illustrator vector designs not the Illustrator program...
So you can make a design into Illustrator, save it as .ai and after open Adobe Flash and go to File->Import->Import to Stage(or Import to library, depends where you want to import the files) and select the .ai file.
Also Adobe Flash can import .psd's and other formats.

Yeah, even i vote for Adobe Photoshop/illustrator + Coreldraw, if you want some freeware then you can even try GIMP which is a OPEN SOURCE program for getting some basic designing jobs completed.

.ai is the Adobe Illustrator file source extension. You can open a .ai file into Illustrator and after you can save it as any image format (.jpg .png .gif etc...).
Same for .psd (.psd is the Adobe Photoshop extension)

Adobe Illustrator is used if you plan on using the logos for other purposes such as printing. In which your vector can be blown up to be what ever size you want. I prefer to use photoshop just because I use photoshop as my primary website development program. I usually design my logo in 300 dpi and save as PDF which most printing companies accept. However if I know the logo is going to be blown up in size then I use Illustrator.

Oh and using vectors instead of rasters (bitmap image) in flash will keep the flash movie amuch lesser file size.
