I recommend you to go for HP, look for something with big cartridges because nowadays the cartridge are really small and you have to refill pretty often.
For example I have an old HP (930c) that is doing a good job even after all this years.

    Also try before you buy.

    Canon Pixma MX870

Like Canon's other printers in its Pixma MX-series, the stylish MX870 has versatile features, including a handy scroll wheel and an ample 2.5-inch LCD, to help you get the job done. We recommend the Canon Pixma MX870 as a do-it-all device with an affordable price tag; just be ready to stomach its intermittent print lag.

    Price: $116.99 - $199.06

I have a Lexmark one that uses 105XL black ink that only cost $5 and prints up to 500 pages. It also scans and all that stuff via Wi-Fi. It doesn't have a fax, but I don't fax so it's perfect for me.

First of all in my opinion always go for Laser Printers.......and I think Samsung Laser Printers are best in the market as there toner can be refilled 2-3 times and these are most cost effective unlike HP, Canon and Lexmark....
