There used to be some free PDF books on email marketing. I am not sure where exactly they are now, but you might want to seaech for them using 'free pdf email marketing' and then this article from mailchimp may come in useful for you - http://www.mailchimp.com/articles/best_practices_in_writing_email_subject_lines/
