advertising on directories is this a new trend?
I hold to their entries and I was thinking about running banner ads there but my Google ad sense occasionally displays banners although there are not banners from a Web application they come from Google ad sense. It could be trendy attitude toward paid and free directories that help that directory owner:)

You can find more focused advertising placements with a niche directory. For example I have a blog directory and so blogs, blog directories and blog resource sites are ideal places for me to advertise.

Suprising as Steve said, niche directories do better. My fruity directory gets tonnes of traffic from directory rate as I expect the niche lists do better due to the smaller volume of sites listed on them.

That is probably what most people would do, but probably not the wisest thing to do.

To give you a quick example, the OP mentions his banner on xyz site, I know the banner well & the site, but sometimes it is not about putting more out there but understanding what you have first. My guess is that banner is pretty well much useless ( but may be wrong )

How ever if i took a campaign with G ( or similar ) and placed that exact same banner in the campaign and run it at the same costs as the existing one, then I could do some fact finding.

For example i would have the option of running 2 banners in the one spot, ( a banner group ) and what would happen is the one working would show more, so say my second banner had the tag ? " limited offer 20% discount sign up now " or similar targeted text and i threw that straight in on the submission page.

What might happen is my CTR may stay the same but my conversions may double ( being a more targeted ad ) not fuzzy please look and i hope you buy ad.

what this would do is change your sums in effect that your NP ( net profit ) would be higher , so now for the same price in advertising your return is enhanced.

What is also important to remember is that the CPC although important to keep as low as possible, also is not a major player in your results as it does not matter if its $1 $2 0r .05 cents.

In the example lets say the current banner showed 50K times a month at a cost of $50 PCM and from that you had 50 clicks this would give a CPM of $1 and a CPC of $1, now lets say banner 1 converts at 1/10 ( at a sell price of $20 ) our return would be $100 less the $50 for the ad, this would give me a $1 GP ( gross profit ) for every $ i spent and lets say operating costs were 20% then my net profit NP would be .8 return for every $1 spent or in this case $50 less 20% = $40

Now in this example you can see that the CPC is although important not the main thing you should focus on its your NP

Ok, now lets say we took the G option as above and had the second banner working with the 20% discount targeted ad but this ad converted 2 x as well, our answer would look like 10 sales at $20 = $200 less our 20 % discount = 160 less our 50 cost for the banner = 110 less our 20% operating = $88 return , so for the same money and time we have doubled our income in effect.

So now you understand rather than just dumping more out there its better to see what your dumping out there first, now with this info you can use the better banner on your other sites, but more importantly you can ask what the page views are and the cost, from that you would know if your paying to much or not for the ad, and also you will know before you even place the ad your expected NP from that ad.

But lets say i already had that ad add on another site ( 2 sites in total ) and ran my test as above, all i would need do now is change my banners on those 2 sites to double my income.

but to do this all you need do is copy and rename the banner to the exact same file name as the banner now showing and upload that to your CP and presto no work from any one and your new ads are showing.

Continue to experiment and improve and your profits will grow.
