If you're talking about effectiveness in a real fight, Jui Jitsu + Boxing is the best combo. For show and display, Wushu and Capoeira look best.

No offence but my personal experience:
Tae Kwan Do, Karate, Judo are all pants - it won't help you in a proper street fight to protect yourself. I'll go for Jeet Kune Do.

Taekwondo does help, it has improved my reflects 100% some guy at my school tried to stab me, and i immediately blocked it before i even knew i was doing it, and it helps your focus, so if you are in a street fight, you are ready and can block there moves while fixing them up:)

I think Tae Kwon Do is the best form of martial art.

Every one of these styles are inefficient in a real fight. How do I know this? No one who uses either of these styles has ever become a champion in UFC or Pride.

The best fighting styles are those used by mixed martial artists. These styles are:

    Shoot Fighting
    Jujitsu
    Grappling
    Wrestling
    Muay Thai
    Kickboxing

All these styles will own Kungfu, Karate, and Taekwondo. Anyone who doesn't believe me can watch UFC to see for themselves. In UFC, Karate dudes always get beat down. A perfect example is UFC 60, where Melvin Guillard beat Rick Davis.

I knew Rick Davis was going to lose, because he used Kenpo Karate, and Guillard used Muay Thai and wrestling, which is a superior style. Case in point.

The question raised in this thread has already been answered by UFC and Pride. All the fighting done over the last 14 years has showed that the styles I listed are the best in the world. Most of the East Asian styles are not useful in competitive fights, though they look cool in the movies.

I have nothing against east Asian styles, and Bruce Lee, Jet Li, and Jacki Chan are cool. But reality is different from fantasy.

If any of you here at DP want to learn a style that can save your live in a real situation, choose one of the styles I listed, or become a mixed martial artist. Better yet, just buy a gun.

The best martial art is whatever one you happen to be studying...

Every person ultimately develops their own personal style. The more styles you know, the more you have to bring to the table for whatever your application happens to be.

As already alluded to, applications differ:

    1) Competition
    2) Life-threatening situations
    3) Day-to-day situations
    4) Health benefits
    5) Spiritual training

and the list goes on and on.

Martials arts (what I would call "true" martial arts) is a very personal thing. I would advise people to become exposed to as many different styles as possible. Since every physical body works differently, you will begin to naturally adapt the styles to the way your body moves. If you consciously approach your studies with the idea that you are creating your own personal style, I believe you will progress faster.

I find it interesting that the question asked was "What was the best martial art," and yet all (or nearly all) of the responses assumed only a single application: fighting/competition.

That is a very important application of Martial Arts, but there are a lot more.

Muay Thai (After watching Ong Back lol). Thai Kick boxing (boxing really helps in street fights because you rarely use kicks in street fights) is awesome though I never practiced it but these days I'm trying to set myself up for boxing :)

Why are people mixing martial art disciplines with street fights?

I agree. Martial art imparts discipline and enhances your spirutuality.

But if its a street fight iguess a mixed style is much better approach than pure fighting styles.

The best weapons you can have in a street fight is a pair of running shoes. Run away from a street fight in first place. Learn the fighting styles in case you cannot!:p:p
