Give some more info! What kind of site, how many visitors do you expect, would you require lots of bandwith, etcetera. There are so many different programs, without this info it's impossible to give you good advice...

The best web host is the one that meets your needs. You will have some sort of plan for your site (i.e. space needed, estimated traffic over time, databases, CPU intensive applications, etc...).

Once you know what you need, it will be easy to find a host and plan that matches up to your needs.

If you have no idea of the site you are going to start with, why pay for hosting where you can get it bannerless for free?

    www.freehostia.com

No gimmicks, no strings attached, I have a site hosted there with good reliability

I've used 12 or 13 different web hosting services, and the best I've found so far is Hostgator

I would not recommend Netfirms. They really su*ks. Avoid netfirms at all cost.

Godaddy is good IMO but I think their domains are very expensive.

Domains are only $7 for the first year ($9 thereafter) and you get free hosting with it. Back in the day domains cost $35 a year.

I have a deluxe package which costs all of $7 a month. I get 100GB of space and 1000GB of transfer. I'm running a number of sites with a single database with about 3 million records (totaling over 6GB) and it's doing fine.

The basic free hosting is very decent.

Here are three things you need to look for in your hosting provider.

    1. How well is the support?
    2. Do they have Cpanel?
    3. How much space and bandwidth will you get for the price?

Of course there are other factors to take in depending on what you need but these are at the least the basics.
