I use Freelancer.com. I used to do graphic design with them, and they are like a middle man for finding clients. They have a writing section, but I dont know if they are the best.

I only have experience on Elance and Odesk both as a buyer. Thoughts: Elance has relatively higher-quality freelancers, many of them from the U.S. and Europe while Odesk has a lot of freelancers from Asia. In terms of freelancer rates, Elance is relatively higher compared to Odesk; but I also think that the quality of work produced by Elancers is better. In terms of projects, you can find good projects on Elance - some of them are posted by medium-sized companies. If the client likes your work, there's a greater chance of them working with you long term.

It depends on which perspective you come from. As a hiring manager - Odesk gives me the best bang for buck and keeps tabs on my freelancers via screen capture. I have a VA working for USD1 an hour!

In terms of a freelancer looking for jobs - competition on both Odesk and Freelancer are steep and you will be up against rock bottom price freelancers. The rates in Elance are more acceptable but you need to show your worth to earn the buck :)

There are tons of freelance sites out there, and I feel odesk, elance and freelancer are the best; freelancer being at the bottom. Just look out for scammers, especially on freelancer. At the start of my writing career, I was scammed by more than one person on freelancer.

If you are very skilled in your field, I'd suggest you go for elance because you'll get a lot of high paying clients there. On the other hand, if you are ok with writing $2 or $3 articles, you can apply at odesk or freelancer.

I personally have luck with ODesk and posting on Craigslist. In my opinion there are some good jobs on ODesk but they are dar and in-between. However, Craigslist is like a gold mind if you post in the correct cities.

Freelancer.com is the most successful and ranked #1 website for freelancers but I personally feel it has a lot of competition and hence, as a starter it would definitely take time until you land on your first project. Here are a list of other freelance websites :
    - elance.com
    - odesk.com
    - guru.com
    - peopleperhour.com
    - rentacoder.com

I would say Fiverr, if you know how to look for gigs or sell gigs there. Look for Level 2 providers with grat reviews. The thing is, the gigs of the best people baseline at $5 and then have add-ons of $10-$50 or more, so the best work you are paying more for...

    ...or being paid more for.

eLance is another good site, and also SEOClerks.

    ODesk and Freelancer.com are good...

...and I agree with the person who said not to overlook CraigsList, and you cal look at or post at ANY Craigslist WorldWide, so try London, NYC, etc...now and then.

I am going to visit there today and send a little time. I have not been there in years. I generally use Fiverr and CraigsList (LA, SF and NYC) to initially get new clients.

But based on your recommendation, I think it is time to give Freelancer.com another try.

Hey Guys, we are a site called devsdesk.com, which will be a gateway for developers and clients to swap work. Stay tuned, feedback would be great.

We are aiming to make it very simple and intuitive.

What is the most automated freelance site? I want to be able to post a gig, select a freelancer and pay once the work has been completed and delivered. I want the website to be the intermediary.
What would be the best site?
I am looking for low priced average quality content.

Yeah, I love the site too, but it can be a little hard to get clients because its so competitive. But then again, more competition equals more money. :D

Aside from Elance and Odesk you can also try Fiverr or Staff.com for full time hires. You can start a gig on Fiverr for $5 and build off that increments if you are willing to offer for that amount. While Staff.com has much more competitive rates because it's for global staff (for example they have web developers for $1200), but not so great if you are hiring someone locally.
