I have the same question - we used Ubercart for Drupal a few times for our projects. I find that it's rather robust system and we used about 25% of it's functionality. Lots of functionality and very heavy for hosting. I am wondering if somebody can recommend a good light weight stand alone open source e-commerce frame work system.
Im using cubecart which seems to work nice after some css tweaks. e.g bannerspaceforsale.corporate-computers.co.uk but for my tools wordpress blog im using a plugin thats directly within wordpress called -wp-e-commerce Wordpress plugin can be found here http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-e-commerce/
Zeuscart is the most popular free open source ecommerce software online. Try it out and it has more facilities to make an online store.
Magento hands down but once you encounter a problem or two, you're gonna have to shell out some serious dough for a Magento programmer to prevent your website from crashing.
I agree Joomla is great and I have also used terapad which ticks all the boxes! Bear in mind though if you intend to optimise your site, I believe, Google doesn't look favorably on these kind of sites. Googles algorithms make judgements and in my experience they think that if a site is a 'good' ecommerce site, a 'serious' ecommerce site then the owner ought to be prepared to spend a few quid on a domain name and a few quid a month for hosting - just my opinionm but the freeby ecommerce sites I set up in the beginning never got anywhere in organic rankings in Google.
I also belive presta is getting better and better, definitly what I would go for, only thing Im missing right now is a express checkout that they do not have at the moment.
Mals e-commerce always worked great for me, but you only get so much without paying. These days feature-laden e-commerce software can be had for pennies, and it will make it easier on you in the long run, believe me
I think at the moment, MagentoCommerce some has started using wordpress as an ecommerce tool, but i think stand alone ecommerce solution like magento can gives you tons of facilities rather than just addon for ecommerce
it really depends what sector you hitting, how many items will be for sale, what is your min requirements. If you talking about medium business with 1000 SKUs - then in my opinion its Magento, but you need to learn (complicated and frustrating sometimes) or hire someone to handle it
Magento is good, but very heavy. zen cart, but I think there is a lot of functions that you don't need and it is kind of outdated look, feel, standard functionality and the way things handled, not to mention admin look and standard template, although to have SEO options and some good stuff, such as easy template installation. Drupal+ubercart is nice, but also heavy on server oscommerce - outdated just like zen cart, but it is totally stripped down, so will need many modules and add-on installed until it looks decent and have all necessary functionality to run modern shop. Also don't like the way things handled from admin prestashop - nice, modern cart, but add ons are outrageously expensive, buy a few of those and could as well bought you some nice expensive shopping cart that already have everything zeus cart - can't say much about it, seems like nice software, but haven't dug deep open cart - so far my favorite. Does have a few minor things, but add ons modules are super easy to install as well as themes. A lot of modules are free, but the paid ones are fairly reasonable priced. Modern look of default template as well as admin. Have some nice standard features, such as additional pictures, lightbox and linking products. Have really nice free module where you can import/export all your products in excel, and as we all know, if you have large catalog (500+) it is basically essential function. All one click to install. Really wish it would have shipping option of flat+per weight, but not a big deal. So far my favorite cart, even though it isn't perfect.
