What is the best forum that can be integrated in wordpress ?? I was wondering if I can integrate mybb in WP too ? Thanks
Hi, I cannot give you an answer for 'best' but I'm sure any forum can be integrated. And (for me) I really like SMF. Best of all, it's free.
Well, bbPress is made by the same people from WordPress and integrates right into WordPress. I don't know how other forum software integrates into WordPress, but I'm pretty sure it can be done with vBulletin and IPB (I think..)
Yes, bbpress is very easy to integrate with wordpress, since it is also made by Automattic, the company of Matt Mullenweg.
does bbpress have the same functions and features as the popular vBulletin? is it good for image sharing and viewing?
there were a lot of bridges to integrate forums with wordpress a year or so but very little of them have kept up with the pace of wordpress releases. Wordpress 2.5 in particular has stopped a few plugins working simple press is a decent plugin which was developed specifically for wordpress. It depends what your looking for ie. if you want something basic then bbpress might be suitable (thats the forum script used on wordpress.org forums) (I wrote a post about this last week about this last week which is why this is all fresh in my head!)
In reality, if you know how you can integrate any forum with Wordpress. Some might just be easier due to plugins and the way they are built. To answer Vinny's question, bbpress is more like wordpress meaning that it comes pretty simple, but it is very easy to add new features via plugins. The developers did that on purpose to make it faster and easier to customize. BBpress is a lot newer than Wordpress, so it still hasn't reached that high level of distinction, but it is being worked on and some great things are on the way for it (especially due to the huge some of money Automattic recently razed from investors.)
it's the most bare-bones forum you can imagine, it basically has no features at all, kind of like one of those "one long list of posts" kind of forums.
I agree. Its good for a support forum or something like that but it doesnt create a community feel (eg lack of avatars and other user features that most other forums have)
Actually the new version does have avatars, which is run through gravatars (there are also plugins to allow users to upload their own avatars like a normal forum, etc.) I have to disagree with you on this one though because one of the key features of bbpress is to add only what you want. There are plugins availible which can give your blog all of those "community" features. I think people need to give bbpress a bigger chance, especially considering that version 1 hasn't even been released yet (it is still at .9 something.) I have a bbpress forum, which I started up recently, and with some customization I have started a pretty nice community out of it and it certainly runs a lot faster than other forum software.
I wasn't aware of the new features. I checked bbpress out recently for the blog post I wrote about wordpress and forums. I was basing my view on the support forums which are currently on wordpress, up until now I haven't seen any bbpress forums which are more advanced than that (maybe because these features have only recently been added). I use vbulletin currently but if bbpress continues to improve I would definately consider migrating over to that (thats assuming integration with wordpress is good).
