I would trust external hard drives to back up important data. Smaller files can be preserved as an email attachment, provided the service provider is a trusted source like gmail etc...

If you have enough upload bandwidth I would use an online service. I have used just about every one you can think of trying them out.. I like Backblaze.com . They are seemless backup.

External HDD will be the best solution, you can encrypt content and even password protect it, very reliable and its movable, I just suggest you to don't use it much if you want some of your data to stay safe and of course remember the environment temperature which play a huge role in keeping your data safe.

I use DVDs, internal and external HDDs.
*All in TrueCrypt containers, just in case any of them get pinched.

Daily: backup to a second internal drive using SecondCopy.
Weekly(ish): backup to 2 x external drives. One kept in a safe at home, one at my parents house.
Monthly: backup to DVDs, date with a Sharpie. Stored in my box full of stuff to grab if the house goes up in flames.

I would never ever use online backups.

If your going to backup dont just rely on partition hard drives because sometimes that can also get corrupted (personal experience) try to back it up in more than 2 places so for example your original data on C: then a back up online such as Dropbox, then a back up on an external hard drive and/or USB pen. This enables you having access to your important data even if two of your back up sources go down.

Even then you should make a third backup because of the UNRELIABLILITY of devices these days they canhave a surge, or just get corrupted at anytime and you will be baffled then.

Both of them are good for data back up. But most of the time used USB drives but I rely most on cd.
