I think you need a magazine style theme that have many regions at default. I like Acquia Prosper.

 

well i am right there with you. But, I was looking at the 960 grid system themes, and I think there are 2 major ones,
omega
grid [i could be mistaken on this name]

anyway the problem i ran into was that the developer of omega rejected all attempts at contacted him through his spam guard and I couldn't ask question. That of course made me not download the theme.

 

If you want a base theme then Fusion is also a good option and they're using 960 grid system.

 

The best theme is your own custom theme. Tailored just like the way you want it.

I prefer to themes which many regions in there. Try to consider Acquia_Marina, Danland, Fever and Newswire. If you need more blocks, use insert block module to add your block into node for frontpage layout. This module will help you to place blocks as much as you like on wherever position.
