What Is The Best Directory Software?

I'm looking into creating my first (and only directory.) It's going to be a blog specific directory. I'm doing this despite all of the negative talk about directories lately because I think it fits the domain perfectly and I can't think of anything else to do with it that would be as good. It's already an older domain (over a year old) and has a bit of PR (2... but should update higher than that.)

I am going to try and make this a real quality directory. IE - No guaranteed links. All sites must be of high quality to be accepted. I may have a "paid for faster review" but poor blogs would be rejected and money given back (or not charged until accepted.)

Anyway - long story short - I'm trying to figure out what directory software to go with to meet my goal. Any advice?

Thanks for the recommendations... I'm actually really wanting something I don't have to do a lot of modifications on. The look of the phplinkdirectory doesn't really thrill me and ... well it looks like the modifications required to get it how I want it will be quite time consuming - www.esyndicat.com seems a bit better looking & easier to use... Any opinions/experience with this one? It's hard to tell just from their sales pages :)

I should have also noted that I'm not looking for free or even extremely cheap... But I'm also not looking to pay $1500 (as I found some directory software that costs that much.) My budget is more in the $150-200 range (tops) for this. The esyndicat script is only $50...

It seems you have an idea of the functionality you want therefore if you could list that functionality it might help people point you in the right direction.

With all the available directory scripts you will need to look at creating a custom skin for it just so your directory stands out from others.

Yes I will definitely be adding original logos and using an original color scheme.

As far as the features I'm looking for... I want the submitter to have the following choices:

    1. Free Submit (no payment, no recip, back of the line... longest wait to be reviewed)
    2. Free Submit With Recip (no guarantee of inclusion, just jumps you in line in front of free submitters)
    3. Paid Review (jumps you ahead of line... second shortest wait for review...no guarantee of inclusion)
    4. Paid Review/Featured (jumps you ahead of line... shortest wait for review, no guarantee of inclusion, but if included will be a "featured" link)

Does this make sense? All links would be lifetime (no monthly subscriptions or anything like that), No links are guaranteed. Links would be periodically reviewed to see if the blog is still active/good etc.

    ---

I also want to easily be able to include GoogleAdSense on the site and other ads... (affiliate)

    ---

I want the layout to be clean ... I like botw's layout a lot.

    Thanks for the help...

    ---

wildweb - I'm looking at your listings as well. Thanks for directing me that way.

Cool. I'm heavily leaning towards that one - got my credit card out and ready to go unless someone convinces me otherwise in the next 30 or so minutes ;)

It helps if the script automatically looks for dead sites and of course sites that have become parked.

I don't know if eSyndiCat does that or not so it is something you might want to check before handing over your cash.

I have only use phpLD so far and I love it :)

You can see the details of "features" provided by each script and then can decide which one is best for you. (Every user have different interpretation of "Best")

Are you looking for something specific as you want to run "Blog Directory" ?

btw...forgot to mention...if you decide on IndexU, let me know and I can get you a 50% coupon or additional savings on multiple domain licenses.

phpLynx is also having a September sale on their script....$35 for the full version.

I'm pretty happy with IndexScript, although the customisation is a bit limited!

www.phplinkdirectory.com as suggested by many is the best. It also has a large customer support, templates available, mods, etc.

    Go for phpld. :)

I also recommend phpLD as their mods, templates easily available all around. You will get free phpld v.2.1 and paid v.3.2 ($25 cost with link back and $75 without link back).
