I hear you with Joomla. It's free for a reason lol.

Regarding PHPLD - Yeah it's got tones of errors in it. Thats why the DIR is just part of my website. It's a resource like everything else.

Sierously though what I don't get is how you can tout a product so hard when you don't even use it. Man get a dir up and than start talking all the time. Until than it's just pointless. I've HYPED THE HELL outof something before only to get it and be like wow. This ISN'T the end all be all.

Problems or no problems unless you are a super coder it's always best to go with the most accepted product as you'll get the most support for it. Also PHPLD for whatever reason became popular a while ago so people with long established websites won't convert regardless it's just not worth it.

I use a script calld Astanda Directory Project (http://www.astanda.com/adp/). It is not as advanced as phpLD or the others on the market, but it is nice enough. It also has a "built-in" search engine, where after you add a website you can crawl their site and it will be input into your database, which can be searched from the UI on the site.

    Check it out.

That is the feature I've been longing for as the next best thing. Think about it, a directory where all of the included sites are spidered and searchable - now we are beginning to look at a possibility of some of the bigger directories giving the Big 3 search engines something to worry about.

I had thought about doing this using Google's custom search tool, but I'd like more control than it offers and would prefer not to have them know what people on my site are looking for. ;)

I do use it Dubz just not letting on what it contains or even letting the engines get at it yet. I plan on starting with content and not building on the fly, as I see too many with no links and that dont do you favours.

I don't think anyone cares if phpLD users convert or not, I don't thats for sure, its up to each and his own. :)

You apparently do as you are constantly promoting your script and making threads where you can talk about how wonderful phpLynx is. Either way you've done alot of talking. I'm looking forward to one day maybe seeing something you've done. I will make sure I'm sitting when I do so I don't fall over with amazement.

Just a note about "a web directory which would be search engine friendly"...

Many of eSyndicat based sites have been indexed and got nice page ranks within 2 month of the existence...

I think they all do WTM, its pretty much a formality these days, problem with this PR speed is it more often than not indexes totally blank categories, but hey who cares as long as it gets you indexed. :)

I use phpLD and consider it to be OK. i don't belive in "the best" scripts. I believe in the ability of an admin to make ANY scrip look and work the best :)

I agree, calling any script the "best" is something like saying a particular vehicle is the "best" - the best for what?

We are constantly seeing folks ask what script is the "best" - they all have their good points and not so good points. The trick is matching the requirements of your site with the scripts available and getting as much of the good and as little of the bad as possible.

Everyone here has their favorites and their less favorites. IMHO, it takes having worked with several of them to be able to offer a truly valid opinion of their abilities. "Best" by definition means comparison and people who respond to these threads with knowledge of only one script simply lack the experience to make that comparison.

I have one site that is almost a year old and another one nearing launch - each uses a different script.

I've only used 2 of the scripts so far (there's more ideas in the works), eSyndiCat (paid version) and phpLynx (free version) and they are quite different in their approach to what I see as the big 3 - security, support, and adaptability.

It's hard to compare a free version vs a paid and a live site vs one in development - but, one site was hacked and the support forum is full of people having problems and there are even several "I hate this script" and "I want a refund" threads. The other support forum is somewhat quiet as people are not having as many problems getting their sites up and running. To me, that alone makes phpLynx worth a look.

As to SEO friendly - any script that ignores that doesn't have much chance of succeeding and like with any type site, the content or lack thereof will always be the dominent force with SEO.

Maybe we should rephrase, but its easier to ask which one is the best as to asking which one is best for a particular task, less finger pressups. :) If someone were to ask me which one were the best I never give answers unless I can back them up though. :p

I kinda think a lot of the times people come and ask 'whats the best script' already knowing where the question is going to lead though, but you do get a teeny bit cynical after a while.
