    Hi,

"I would like to know which is the best directory script around to start a web directory which would be search engine friendly!"

Before you get flamed for this thread, try doing a search, this question is asked on a weekly basis.

"If there are any directory owners around, please tell me which directory scripts you use!!"

Your in a forum full of directory owners, there are plenty of us around 24/7 :)

My preference is phpLD (phplinkdirectory.com) but there are several scripts available that are just as good. As I said, do a search and you will find similar threads with hundreds of responses.

hackersrepublic, much like SilkySmooth is already pointing out, its not a case of the "Best" script, what is suitable for one person/job may not be suitable for another.

We usually have our own reasons for why we choose a particular script, it can be for allsorts of reasons.

Some will love the admin area of one, other will like the features on another, price, support, size of community, many things may influence a choice.

The good thing is many have a free version, you can always grab that, try it out, see if you like working with something.

I use PhpLD, Indexscript, but im also looking at phplynx and waiting for one from QLweb too.

    The choice really is yours.

We all have our own opinions in what the best is, and we're all looking for different features, however if you're planning to have a very good directory, which has the best features, I would truly recommend using phpLynx, which is my own preference.

    Thanks,

I use www.esyndicat.com, which I like because it's reasonable to get an unlimited site license, it's easy to edit the templates, and it has a pretty powerful feature set.

Tell you hands down that phpLynx is going to take some beating especially now they started adding thier toys to the full script like the FREE deep linking feature http://www.cantufind.com/forum/showthread.php?t=678 and what I think is a killer feature the ability to submit to more than one category in a single submission, this one feature alone makes it stand out from the crowd, don't take my word for it though as I'm as biased as the next, If you really want to know you'd be better advised to go to each of the recommends and look at the scripts, and judge the pro's and cons' of each one as they all have some defecit regardless.

One thing about phpLynx I'm so super keen on, it adds features for free but keeps the cost low, to me that more than compensates for the lack of templates they have at the moment as they are new, but what with the money you save from not needing to buy mods you can get a shit hot one made unique to yourself. :)

    Just my 2 cents.

It's always going to be tough for people to convert from one script to another pipes, lots of people are happy with what they got. I looked at the OP and if we were to judge any script on the net pound of pound taking into account the cost of things phpLynx would deffo be up on the winners rostrum, but as I said in an earlier post some people have a fixed idea of what they want and don't want to change.

I was lucky, I abandoned my old script a long time ago and came back fresh so it was easy for me to make a choice, I even called them out on the new features of multi cat listing and the deep link, but fair do's to them they raised to it and its in there free now. :)

You can do that with pretty much any free script.

I think the possible best is yet to come, im excited about the scripts that we dont know about yet, i know that somewhere there will be handfuls of people working hard and coming up with totally brand new ideas.

I feel quite comfortable about the future of web directories, the unknown is more exciting. :)

Couldn't agree more, I think the recent new competition has kicked the ones resting on complacent thrones up the butts so we should see more and more improvements from all quarters. :)

PHPLD - It's alright obviously has it's inherent flaws but has the most support, mods and templates so it's a no brainer.

Joomla on the other hand is really powerful yet no one is using it. I always said if I make another dir it will be joomla based.

What puzzles me is how such a long established script is still having problems, I kinda like phpLD for what it is but think you should never have as many problems as they do, waiting for fixes, paying for mods, paying for support certainly is a no brainer! If there are scripts like phpLynx and others probably even better out there that don't have any of the problems that phpLD have, which one is the no-brainer? There's only so long you can rely on a template base as a reason to get a script, and other scripts will catch up at a rate of knots I suspect.

Joomla is a coders paradise, absolutely love it, but for people who want an easy life and maybe don't have the skillset to work on code then a script that offer more for less is the one to go for any day.

It is only my 2 cents worth and as already told to the OP, we all have our bias, this question has been asked a zillion times but ultimately it will always be down to the individual on why what and how he spends his money.
