I've had a good number of drives crash on me (seagate/maxtor) thus far my WD drives have been working solid for the past couple of years. Just do some research on the model of the drive you wish to purchase look up feedback/benchmarks.
as for me,seagate for my desktop has been serving for 4 years,WD for my laptop has been serving for 2 years, and so far so good. but I heard that seagate is having some quality problems currently and many users have complaint online. if I come to think about ungrading my computer in future,I would definitely turn to seagate or WD,and as to the exact brand, it depends on whose popularity is higher by then.
I dont know about all of the cryterea together because I have had either a fast hard drive with short life or a slow one with long life. I have an old seagate that is horibly slow and noisy but it has been steadily pumping out reliable data for about 7 years. on the other hand I have had Maxtors with blazing speed and had to return sevral of them under warinty for replacement. My last one died about 2 months out of warinty. I have now switched to Hitache/IBM. I havn't had it long enough to say anything about durability, but it is defanatly fast and quiet.
