What is the best backup device for me?

    Hi,

I'm new to this forum, so apologies if a similar thread has already been posted.

In the next few days I will be buying a backup storage device, to backup all my data.

I have been browsing the web and have so far been interested in the Western digital storage devices.

I'm backing up data from my notebooks and require something around 1Tb.

Any recommendations or advice would be much appreciated.

    Thanks, :)

1TB.. wow thts alot really.. the bigget extern HDD u can get these days is 2TB i guess.. havent seen more than that..
the point is if you would backup that much amount on a regular basis, then probably u need more than just a 2TB extern HDD..

What are ur requirements actually and how often to u backup and how much data is it that u would backup one time...?

    Hi Laserflight,

I don't need to backup a full 1Tb drive. I have approx 450Gb that I would like to backup and I would like extra space for expansion.

    Thanks,

    Cain

    Hi Cain!
Do you have to backup that amount too often? and when u make a new backup do you delete the old one(funny question but still) ?? cuz if your increases in data between two backups is like in a few hundered MBs and you remove your previous backup, then a 1TB drive can do your job. But if uhave to backup that amount again n again on a regular basis, then you'll run out of space on the 2nd backup, so it's better to think of a better solution then...

i dnt know what exactly you situation is, could u explain a little more?

My vote would also go to the Clickfree C2N (500GB) you just plug it into the usb port and thats it you dont have to touch, you can then unplug it and then backup any other machine that you own and this includes macs.

It doesn't really matter what drive you use for backup, any of the big names will be fine.
Just make sure you keep it OFF SITE (at your parents/girlfriends/work), and not right next to your computer :)

You might want to take a look at SecondCopy. I've been using it for years, and absolutely swear by it.

You might also want to take a look at TrueCrypt to encrypt your backups. It's open source and free.

    Hi everyone,

    Thanks for the replies.

    To answer your questions :

Laserflight - the device will be used only for automatic backups

Kerosene - Thanks for the links, and I fully intend to store it in a safe location

    Thanks

Generally, the backup device you need depends on the size of what you want to backup

Before backup file, compress all file to *.rar then backup all file.
