What really works for your websites? Simple or complicated banners? Context advertisement? PR articles? Press releases? Do you pay for it or just exchange links/banners? (We are trying all mentioned above for our projects and all depends on the kind of the advertised project and on the page where it is advertised. If - for example - the two projects are covering the same theme then flash banners are quite good source of new visitors...)
Free advertising methods, direct advertising. You need to find places that are related to your site and then post your site. Banner ads do well aswell.
Direct advertising has been the most profitable for me. You really have to find related websites for it to be successful. Also, you really need to try to negotiate pricing if possible. Generally though, cheap advertising = terrible results.
Just follow these steps and you can't go wrong... 1) Post new articles about your site (no duplicates) in the appropriate categories on Digg.com 2) Viral-market on Myspace & Facebook, using comments and private messages to as many users as you can 3) Post on forums and blogs with your site's URL in your signature. 4) Spread word of mouth advertising to as many people and communities as you can. 5) Have all your friends and family help you repeat the previous 4 steps. Ever thought of mailing an offline newsletter to promote your business? I am a firm believer in using all forms of media. Just my 2 cents.
I'm a pretty big fan of PPC. If you can do a referral contest or something (depends on the site), that can generate a lot of traffic if you get the right people to it
This sounds stupid but it's cheap. Radio stations use SWAG right "stuff we all get" Order stickers with you domain name on it. Give a ton of Stickers away to your radio station and they will give it away to all thier listeners. Also I went to the mall and stuck my sticker on inconspicuous places. Bus, stops. Public Bathrooms, anywhere people are. I also put a clean decal on the back of my tahoe so people can see my fightstrike DOT com decal on my back window. Those are some good ways. I live in Albuquerque NM and my analytics show it's helped using these methods
Simple, yet funny, interesting ads in other webmasters' sites, and in certain magazines and newspapers offline. I stay away from flash ads.
