I wonder if it is not just a place to run co-op ads?

    1. Advertising revenue from directory visitors.
    2. Advertising revenue from selling premium spots in the directory.
    3. Lots of pages to place Coop links on means heavy Coop weight without a lot of work building content.

You don't need much, if your directory doesn't have much of images. I have a very basic and plain directory. So far it has consumed 6 Mb of space and 200 MB of bandwidth during March. I don't have any image on that.

Ideally, you should be ok with 25 MB and 1 GB config.

Why I started a directory? I had a domain and was just wondering what use should I put that and one day I came hare and got the idea to create directory.:D

Software depends on what OS you have selected for hosting, like windows or linux.

I can comment on Linux, as I have been using that only :D

There are plenty of software or I would call as script that could be used for directory hosting. The selection depends on what features you are looking at.

You can find an exhaustive list of such scripts at:
    http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Scripts_and_Programs/Link_Indexing/index.html

Personally I have been using biz-directory.org/directory_script.php and dbmasters directory script.

There is also script from dew-code.com that comes pre-installed with fantastico(at Cpanel) and is a nice script.

Running a directory and/or forum is a great idea if it revolves around your area of expertise. People love coming to specific sources that they trust.
You can always find a good listing in Google results or msn and Yahoo! but some web surfers prefer to go where they feel like someone is providing good results based on human edited listings.

I started a directory over the weekend because I had a domain and I was bored. It is going to be directed towards forums and messageboards so when I am satisfied that it is going to look the way I want it I will post a link here. If anyone has an extra minute to review it for me please PM me
    Thanks
